Antique vehicles get royal treatment http://www.ekathimerini daily.com/255400/gallery/ekathimerini daily/in-images/antique-vehicles-get-royal-treatment

Ten vehicles that once belonged to Greece’s former royal family have been transferred to a new storage area to undergo further maintenance. The eight cars and two electric tricycles had recently undergone restoration work by a team of conservators from the Culture Ministry to remove built-up dirt and dust after a long period of immobility on the premises of the former royal estate at Tatoi in northern Athens. The antiques, aged between 55 and 82 years, are considered exceptional examples of luxury cars of the 20th century and have historic significance as they are associated both with members of the former royal family and international personalities, as well as important moments in modern Greek history. Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said the new storage area provides the necessary conditions that will allow an assessment of their state of preservation and for the continuation of the necessary work. “The Maintenance Department will continue the detailed documentation of their maintenance status, and will investigate the construction materials, their peculiarities for corrosion, their further protection and promotion,” she said. As President of the International Association of Byzantine Studies and on behalf of all members of the Association as well as the wider scholarly community I write to condemn in the strongest terms the recent decision of the Turkish Council of State and of the President of the Turkish Republic, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to return the Ayasofya Museum to its former status of a mosque.

Myth-inspired museum garden opens to visitors http://www.ekathimerini daily.com/254847/gallery/ekathimerini daily/in-images/myth-inspired-museum-garden-opens-to-visitors

Some 6,000 native shrubs and trees, including a 1,300-year-old olive tree, adorn the new garden at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, which opened to visitors on Saturday. The garden contains plants found in Greek mythology and is divided into three sections: Botanical walks, the "Arcadian landscape" and a small artificial hill in the center for the old olive tree. "Our reasoning was for the museum garden to be linked to the museum itself and its collections. We have selected plants that point to to the Homeric epics and signs will be placed in each flowerbed with their names, while informative material will be distributed to the visitors," botanist Dr Antonis Skordilis, who is founder and CEO of Ecoscapes, the company who created the garden, told Kathimerini.
