Estimation of the number of girls at risk of FGM in the EU

Description
EIGE is estimating the number of girls at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg and Spain. The study will use EIGE’s risk estimation methodology, which was previously used to estimate the number of girls at risk of FGM in Ireland, Portugal and Sweden, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy and Malta.
Accurate estimations of the number of girls at risk are required to effectively tackle FGM. To support evidence-based policymaking EIGE will provide tailor-made recommendations for each of the four countries. The recommendations will take into account patterns of migration and will be informed by an analysis of the policy and legislative framework, sessions with migrant communities, experience-sharing sessions with policymakers and experts, as well as the risk estimations in each country.
FGM is a severe form of gender-based violence, which the EU is committed to eliminating. This work will support EIGE’s long-term objective to help eliminate gender-based violence in the EU.

In 2015, European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) developed and published the first step-by-step guide to estimate the number of girls at risk of female genital mutilation in the European Union. The methodology extrapolates prevalence data from countries where FGM is practiced to migrant girls living in the European Union, through a mixed-method approach.
